Theme: Change

Context: Following the Civil War he U.S. entered a period called Reconstruction. Reconstruction was implemented after a fierce debate in Congress between competing ideas between Republicans who agreed with the Presidential plans for Reconstruction and the plan put forth by Radical Republicans. Although important constitutional strides were made, this 10 year period from 1867-1877 was characterized by a failed attempt to protect freedmen from their southern state government.

Task

* Discuss the competing plans for Reconstruction. Be sure to include specific details as well as the rational for the plans.
* Discuss the effect of the plan put forth and its eventual failure culminating in the Compromise of 1877.
